Believe it or not, these pictures weren't taken in a remote location. In fact, this little grove of pine trees is more on the beaten path than off of it. Luckily though, despite this thicket being right behind the soccer field on campus, soccer isn't in season. I avoided being that weird girl taking pictures of herself, at least for these pictures anyways. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is definitely one of my favorite outfits that I've put together since starting school and getting back from my adventures abroad. I purchased the purse and sweater while I was in the UK and trust me, they've both gotten a lot of wear since then. Some of my purchases were far less practical, as vacation buys can be on occasion. But let's be honest, I didn't spend three weeks overseas for the practicality of it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While I'm glad that the weather is warming up (especially this week in Tennessee- it'll get up to 70!), my wardrobe largely consists of colors that are better suited for cooler temperatures. I especially love the rich combination of black with the color of leather on my gloves and bag. I know I'll be able to achieve a similar effect with fewer layers, but I'll be the first to admit that I will be a bit sad to put away my favorite sweaters once spring truly arrives. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm in the midst of the beginning stages of spring semester, including starting a new internship today! That being said, I can't wait to upload all of my snapshots from my travels, even if they will seem a bit out of season by the time I finally put them up. We all know that the first few days of spring are a tease anyways.</div>

My favorite thing to do is to scamper along the rocks of a shoreline, any shoreline. Fortunately, where my parents live in Rockwall features quite an impressive manmade lake/resoirvoir and a shoreline to match. It makes for fantastic viewing of sunsets and even the Dallas skyline from 30 miles away. I feel like these pictures almost look like they were taken in the middle of nowhere, but nope. They were taken right down the road from my parents home, in front of the local movie theatre.
I apologize for the copious amount of pictures here. I just really couldn't decide which ones best suited the purpose. The mood that day was so great, that it is impossible to say for me a favorite. I certainly hope you feel the same!Ashlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09088369640004992780noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7371698695773533735.post-66384178072169474002014-01-14T13:00:00.000-05:002014-01-15T17:14:02.102-05:00Much Happy. 2013 was a particularly hard year for my family because we lost a member. I don't mean a person necessarily, but we had to put my dog, Rocky, who we have had since I was six years old, to sleep. While my younger dog, Pebbles, featured here, is still alive, my whole family feels the hole that Rocky left. Pebbles was especially affected given that Rocky was a big brother figure to her. However, we have been able to shower Pebbles with twice the amount of love since Rocky's death. It's the least we could do for her.
Anyways, I used to think that I was definitively a cat person. I have cat-like tendencies myself, preferring my own company, etc. However, at some point, my preferences shifted. Because I'm more of a quiet loner, I prefer people and animals who are quite different from me. My spirit is more attracted to that of dogs and dog people, so slowly, I've started to prefer the idea of having a lovely dog of my own one day. I'm not sure what kind I want, but I can't wait for the day that my pup gets to come home with me.
And for those of you who spend as much time on the Internet as I do, you'll recognize the title of this post as being from the Doge meme that has catapulted to popularity recently. I found it and thought that none of my friends would think it is as funny as I do, but quickly realized that we all share an affinity for the doge. We even spent an entire Christmas party speaking just like the cute little shiba-inu. I'm glad that I have people who find such quirky things humorous, or I'd do a lot of laughing to myself.Ashlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09088369640004992780noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7371698695773533735.post-76090951333294516712014-01-12T13:29:00.001-05:002014-01-12T13:29:12.371-05:00Easy Does It<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I feel like what womens magazines call weekend wear has quickly become a staple in my wardrobe. Easy tops, jeans, and flat boots are my uniform as of late. It certainly makes getting dressed that much easier when I can just through on easy pieces and go. Also, I'm not sure if anyone has noticed, but this my ultimate lazy-chic hairstyle. Throw my hair in a messy bun and tie a scarf around it and I'm ready to conquer the day.
Another really simply part of these pictures is the context that they were taken. My little sister and I just wandered into our front yard in Texas and tried to get the best backdrop we could. It's not the most glamorous, certainly, but it reflects the mood of the day.
When this is posted, I'll be in Belfast in Northern Ireland. I'm excited to get back and share all of the wonderful things I've experienced so far. Hopefully no one will get sick of the massive amounts of pictures I'm sure to take and post!Ashlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09088369640004992780noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7371698695773533735.post-77186447966308867402014-01-06T11:00:00.000-05:002014-01-06T11:00:05.111-05:00Family Affair<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i> </i>These pictures prove two things to me. That my dad has pretty great taste in what he keeps around. And that I will always prefer fall scenery and wardrobe choices over any other season. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First of all, I was wearing the outfit sans awesome hat when I came over to my dad's house. I had an interview for a super exciting internship with a fashion company that day, so I thought that the outfit was the perfect balance of casual and professional. I know, most companies probably wouldn't consider printed cord leggings professional, but the office was definitely more on the casual side. I made the right choice of outfit. However, I didn't add the hat until I was taking pictures later that day. I'm glad I did! In fact, the hat is currently on my traveling adventures with me, so hopefully you'll be seeing a lot more of me in it. Thanks Dad!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Secondly, the fall colors. The warm orange color on the cords definitely steers this outfit more towards fall territory. I know the same ensemble could be done in more wintry colors, but at this point I'm not even sure what that would look like. I do like the pale, fresh blues and bright reds of spring and summer (are those warm weather colors for anyone else?); but I mostly abhor pastels of any variety. Pink usually makes me eyes hurt. So, autumnal colors like mustard, burgundy, burnt orange, and emerald rule my wardrobe for most of the year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One last note, my 5-zip mini bag from Rebecca Minkoff was a bit of an impulse buy from the Zappos Black Friday sale. But boy, am I glad I snagged it (and at almost 50% off to boot!). I've worn the purse essentially every day since it came in the mail. It matches my school backpack. And I've quickly learned that the shade of green it is goes with everything and is a new favorite for sure. Long live small purses that can quickly fit into carry on luggage, too! It's seriously a must have for anyone who travels a lot.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When this is posted, I'll be en route to Wales. Hope everyone has a lovely week!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have a theory that all of the problems in my life can be solved by buying a dozen hot donuts from Krispy Kreme and a Coke. The literal act of scarfing down three donuts that just got out of the frier doesn't actually solve anything. But taking that small break from life, that small pause just for myself, that's what allows me to gather myself and move on.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm not sure when my obsession with donuts started. Now, I say obsession with donuts, but I must admit I'm a bit of a brand loyalist when it comes to my donuts of choice. I love small town shops like <a href="https://plus.google.com/105055658563966874287/about?gl=us&hl=en">Richie Kreme</a> in Maryville, but if I'm going for a chain, I will go to Krispy Kreme every time. After all, <a href="http://www.krispykreme.com/about-us/history">the chain started in the Southeast</a>. The branding is also something to be admire: the classic red, white, and green boxes get me every time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since I got to college, one of my favorite ways to spend time with someone is to hop in my car, turn on some good music, and make the twenty minute drive to the closest Krispy Kreme. I buy us a dozen to share, kick back, and let the night unfold from there. This tradition is actually how I met Patrick, who I then dated for almost a year. I'm telling you, these donuts have magical powers. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Alright, so magical powers might be a bit of stretch. But there's something about being able to suspend any problems in time and just scarf down horribly unhealthy food while smelling the sweet aroma of new donuts being fried. I can't remember ever being sad while in my local Krispy Kreme. Buying a dozen allows me to share the treat with my friends, something that always brings a smile to my face as well. Next time you're feeling down or stressed out, give my method a try. Even if you have to go to Dunkin. </div>

I'm making the final arrangements for my international trip to the UK and Ireland. We're stopping in London, Liverpool, Belfast, and Dublin. It's crazy that the second day of 2014 is going to be spent flying halfway across the world on my first international trip. That being said, I've decided to forgo almost all forms of social media. I'm not bringing my computer, but I will have several outfit posts scheduled while I'm gone and will be able to check emails. You can still access my posts from Twitter and Facebook if that it how you normally follow my blog, but I won't be posting anything other than scheduled links and pictures on Instagram. If you'd like to follow my daily adventures, feel free to follow me: <a href="http://instagram.com/trippplethread">trippplethread</a>. I'm excited for my big adventure!Ashlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09088369640004992780noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7371698695773533735.post-83110156676238959982013-12-31T17:00:00.000-05:002013-12-31T17:00:05.193-05:002 0 1 3<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've never thought that I would be happy to see a year go. I usually like to cling onto all the memories I made before the date of December 31st. I don't want to miss a scrap of what just passed, feeling like a diver with a limited oxygen tank but memories are what's giving me life. New Year's parties usually come along with me being fairly silent, a kind of stunned silence, because another year is passing. But 2013 is different. 2013 is what I'd call in terms of sports a "recruiting" year. What I mean by that is simply that this was a year where I had to rebuild my life. My mom and step dad, who I lived with and considered their house "home", moved halfway across the country to Texas. I didn't go with them.</div>

<i>Scenes from my summer trip to Texas.</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Instead, I wasted my summer attempting to salvage a relationship that was quickly breaking down under the pressure of changing dynamics. Since then, I've run the spectrum from casual relationships to thinking I was going to be married soon, possibly before I graduated college. Through it all, I've learned that I <i>love</i> love, even when it kicks the shit out of me (thanks, <i>Love Actually</i> for that accurate portrayal of what love is like). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>It's probably weird to post this picture, but it happened. I thought I'd get married to my high school sweetheart, but life got in the way. I'm not complaining.</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So no, I won't be getting married soon. Well, I could, but not to the person I thought I would be. But through all this heartache, this rebuilding, I got something better than I ever could have if it were all just smooth sailing. I got perspective. I got the ability to help people who are going through the same as me. I got gratitude. I got pretty good at writing poems. I got closer to God, a relationship that I have to constantly work on because I'm so likely to get distracted by my temporal relationships. And you can bet that I got a hell of a lot tougher. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Oh hey there, tattoo.</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I can without a doubt say that this has been the hardest year of my life. But a lot of milestones happened along the way, too. I <a href="http://www.metropulse.com/news/2013/apr/10/ashlyn-kittrell-knoxvilles-fashion-blogger/">was profiled by The Metro Pulse in Knoxville</a>. I got my first tattoo. I turned 20. I got personal best times for my mile, my 5k, and my 6k. I came in first place for my cross country team at a pretty large meet. I took my first ever poetry class and came away with such a powerful new tool for expression. I became an assistant editor for my school newspaper. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I grew and grew and grew some more. Sometimes I felt like a perfect rose and sometimes I felt like a weed. But now I see that I've been a live oak, my favorite tree, all along. Live oaks are famous for their strength and endurance. They get their name because they stay green throughout winter. And yeah, it doesn't hurt that it's a very Southern tree. I try to think of live oaks often, whether they are lining the streets of historic Savannah, weathering the salt spray and brisk winds from the ocean, or touching in the sky above the streets in my new Texas neighborhood. It's a symbol of hope for me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8177/8041829538_6632c5b28f_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="900" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8177/8041829538_6632c5b28f_b.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>I didn't take this in 2013, but it's an old film photo that attempts to encapsulate the beauty live oaks.</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i> </i>There's been several times when I've felt so alone that I couldn't stop crying. I pride myself on being very positive, but I broke down. I needed to. And then, after all the tears had dried, I <i>always</i> realized that I wasn't alone. There are so many people in my life that I am grateful for. In the matters of romantic love, 2013 wasn't really a win for me. But friendly love? Godly love? Family love? I have never felt so much dang love in my whole life! My friends and family have seen me through so much this year. I'm glad I got the chance to let them in more instead of keeping everything pretty guarded. It's made me that much more positive in the end.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I wouldn't necessarily trade 2013 in for anything else, but 2014, with its new last digit and its blank slate....that's looking pretty good. I even start it out in another country. I realize this is a pretty giant personal post, but I thought it was about time that I explained some of the things that happened to me on some level. I already feel more renewed. 2013 can go out with a bang, that's for sure, because I will be celebrating the end of it like crazy. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i> </i>My mother and I have a running joke that she is Morticia and I'm Wednesday Addams. This was after I dressed up as Wednesday for Halloween, compiling the costume out of things in my closet. She later told me that there is a picture of her with a vase of "flowers" with their blooms cut off- just the stems- that was taken of her when she was younger and playing like she was Morticia. Whenever my family does something well, kooky, we have a habit of humming the Addams family theme under our breath.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyways, part of the reason why I'm particularly inclined to like Wednesday is my affinity for black. Black reminds me of Johnny Cash more than anything, though, so I'm just fine with it being the dominant neutral in my wardrobe. My mom has softened up a bit and prefers brown, but I'm not sure I'll ever make the shift. I actually <a href="http://highlandecho.com/fashion-forward-paint-it-black/">wrote a column about my love of black for my school paper</a>, should you want to read even more about the obsession.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I know this outfit isn't entirely black, but I usually reach for a black item as my base. I usually mix the shade with denim or a cream colored neutral item to soften it a wee bit, but when I'm wearing all black I feel like I can easily take my day in stride.</div>

<a href="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5498/11426636786_bf882ddd10_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" class="change_opacity" height="900" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5498/11426636786_bf882ddd10_b.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The reason I never defend my love of Young Adult (and even children's) novels is because the ones I read are usually good enough to transcend any age group and become a true classic. <i>Eleanor & Park</i> is certainly no exception. After reading the entire John Green canon years ago, I figure I'd stroll down the YA aisle to see what else was noteworthy. I had seen the cover of <i>Eleanor & Park</i> pinned on the Urban Outfitters Pinterest, so it caught my eye. Then the short description on the inside of the dust jacket won me over. And probably the fact that it combines "punk rock and true love" on the cover.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The premise is simple: a new girl comes to school and is pretty much instantly outcast. But then she, Eleanor, sits with Park on the bus. While the relationship is slow to build, especially because of the social problems it presents for Park to like Eleanor, it is such a wonderfully accurate portrayal of falling in love for the first time. Eleanor swoons all day after Park holds her hand. I can remember doing the same. While this is certainly an endearing love story, it's much more raw than that. It explores abusive relationships (don't worry, not between the titular characters), social expectations, peer pressure, and a culture before cell phones. I can't imagine what it would be like to date without technology at this point in my life, but reading about a fledgling couple in the 1980s gave me a bit of a romantic notion for it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think the reason why I liked the story so much is that it forces readers to not be so <i>damn cynical</i>. Love like this happens, even for teenagers. This won't be an enjoyable read if you roll your eyes the whole time. The magic is in the sincerity. And I would love to go back to a time in my life that was simple enough to freak out over someone holding my hand. (Ok, I still do that. Can't lie.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you're looking for an intense read that you have to analyze for weeks to understand, this obviously isn't for you. I read it in about two days. But it will stick with me forever.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i> </i>A few weeks ago, the weather hadn't quite turned nasty. Although the night before I took these pictures was rainy, it was sunny and hovering around seventy the day I took these pictures. Weather goes back and forth so often in Tennessee that it doesn't really feel like winter until January. And I'm typing this from my parents' house in Texas, where it is supposed to be in the 60s all week. I'm not complaining. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This outfit represents where my style has been headed lately. I no longer think that in order to feel dressed up I have to be wearing well...a dress. I've felt that way for quite some time, but it's really starting to hit home. I like to think that it's my tomboy roots coming back out. A girl can only handle so many peter pan collars and floral prints until she just wants to get something dirty. I joked on a cross country trip that sometimes I just like to dress like a thirteen year old hipster boy- band tees, beanies, skinny jeans, and Converse. The zeitgeist seemed to fall this way after Cara Delevigne rose to superstar status, but I'm not complaining too much.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The black and white preset from VSCO seemed to fit my mood for these pictures. I'll admit that I spent a lot longer than I should have playing around with my self timer remote to take some moody self portraits of myself, but I thought I'd spare you the extra selfies. Sometimes a girl just feels like she looks good....and possibly even better in black and white.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Tomorrow marks the day when I begin the begrudging shift into a more holiday appropriate wardrobe. It's the day where I officially begin celebrating Christmas, sure, but I always hesitate to leave fall hues behind for more sparkles. Can't November and autumn last just a little bit longer?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
However, Black Friday has always been a day of family tradition for my family and me. It's more than just scouring the mall for good bargains. We have shared some of the greatest laughs as a family together over meals at Cracker Barrel and iHop after deliriously getting out of bed at 3 or 4 AM mainly for the thrill of people watching. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This year is the first year in a long time that my aunt and cousin won't be joining my mom and I in the madness of Black Friday shopping. It really is a silly tradition, but that's why we love it. We always come back with more stories to tell than items bought and I wouldn't have it any other way.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I have so much to be thankful for this year: I'm thankful for my family that is letting me type away on this blog post; my little sister (pictured below) for being the sweetest person I know and <i>always</i> being game to take my outfit pictures (at eleven years old, she is better at it than many of my friends and my own mother);the fact that my mother and stepfather drove all the way back to Tennessee so that I wouldn't have to travel to Texas alone; my extended family for opening up their home to all of us for the holiday; all of the crazy stuff I've gone through this year to get me to where I am right now. I'm so blessed. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And, to be honest, I'm thankful for how perfectly festive I was able to dress today. It's the little things.<br />

I haven't always embraced cold weather to the extent that I do now. After finding a few coats that I really like, I realize how a brisk walk in cold weather can make the senses come alive. It's almost as if Jack Frost is my muse once winter rolls around. However, on one of the last days over seventy that we will probably see this autumn, I was pleased to be able to break out this beautiful black kimono jacket as a light layer. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are some items in my wardrobe that truly do infuse my day with a sense of magic. I love how it seems impossible to have a bad day when you are wearing a favorite outfit, or even just a favorite pair of jeans. The way this particular outfit came together made me feel completely on top of the world the day I wore it. Despite not really being able to figure out what to pair my cowboy boots with up until this point, I was pleased with the slight Western vibe that they gave my outfit. I already know that my imogene + willie jeans are a go-to if I want to feel my best, but I have a feeling I'll be incorporating the lacy jacket and boots into outfits more often as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was even confident enough to take my pictures in a pretty open spot on campus. I just couldn't resist the beautiful autumn leaves. If I had waited much longer, the pretty yellow leaves on the tree would have joined their friends on the ground as we had a storm not long after I took these pictures. It was one of those days where everything just turned out how it should!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i> </i>When you wear a sweatshirt with studded shoulders, the day doesn't usually mess with you. It's not that I could do any real damage with the little silver guys (they aren't actually spikes, after all), but my whole attitude about the day changes whenever I throw on this particular piece of armor. This sweat shirt from Others Follow is comforting with its fleece lined fabric, but at the same time it sends a certain vibe of "I got this." to anyone who crosses my path. For that reason, it is a favorite of mine to don during tests or emotionally stressful days.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That's my favorite thing about fashion. Even when I am feeling completely down, hopeless even, I can still pull something out of my closet that will make me feel a bit more in control. I don't feel perfect, of course. But knowing that I can still choose how to present myself every single day reminds me of just how lucky I am. Not only do I remind myself to be positive, but how I dress will ultimately affect how other people treat me during the day. Perhaps it's a cyclical effect: I'm more confident and therefore more people take me seriously. Or perhaps it is that people treat me differently because, as my dad commented on my Instgram selfie with this sweater, I look like a <a href="http://hrhardball.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/roadwarrior1.jpg">road warrior</a>.</div>

Only one of my <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMNw_-yUm_0&noredirect=1">exes lives in Texas</a>, but I still hang my hat in Tennessee. There's certainly more parallels than just the George Strait song that I've noticed between the two states (Sam Houston and Davy Crockett anyone?). I really hold both of them dearly. After Mom and Jim and Carrie moved out to the most charming little town near Dallas, I knew I'd be sucked into the let's-love-Texas fest right along with them. I'll always be a mountain girl at heart, but the personality and values of my family just <i>fit </i>in Texas. The music, the hats, and the attitude just make me glad that even though that part of my family moved 900 miles away, that it was to the Lone Star state. I can't wait to go back for a while!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This <i>particular</i> hat is quite a statement maker. I've been searching for a wide-brimmed, stiff black fedora and this little number will be perfect for the colder months. I snatched it up as soon as I saw Jigsaw London tweet about it and how much of a hit it was sure to be. They were right: at the time that I bought it, only two were left in stock. <a href="http://www.jigsaw-online.com/products/theodora-hat-6988">They've since restocked</a> so be sure to snatch one up if you are looking for a cool alternative to traditional winter hats. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There's something about leopard print. Whenever I see the little spots peaking out at me in the racks of stores, I know it's something I'll at least take a glance at. Typically, I prefer subtlety when it comes to the print: ballet flats or a belt are usually how I incorporate the print into my outfits. But after seeing a few Pin-worthy outfits online with leopard coats as well as reading <a href="http://www.luckymag.com/style/2013/11/first-person-leopard-coat">this great essay</a> in Lucky Magazine, the idea of obtaining my own purr-fect jacket just wouldn't leave.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't have to wait long to make that purchase dream a reality. On a recent girls weekend out, my stepsister, stepmom, and I were on our way back from Atlanta when we decided to make a pit stop in Chattanooga. Normally, Forever 21 isn't exactly the first place on my mind when it comes to shopping, but we were all exhausted and frankly I only wanted to go into one store. I'm glad that Forever 21 was the first store I saw. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Not only was the sale section the most extensive I've seen, but everything was an additional fifty percent off. That put the price of this fuzzy, wonderful coat at a mere $13 or so. The minimalist in me was shrieking at my rebellious side that I didn't need something like this, especially considering the number of other jackets I've accumulated over the years. I ESPECIALLY didn't need a jacket that rendered me skeptical of its quality. But I tried it on a few times, double checked with the sales women that it was in fact on even deeper sale, and decided to hell with it- I'd buy the coat.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can't really be a shrinking violet in a leopard coat. It's my fashion philosophy that everyone is so worried about their own insecurities that they are too busy to judge you on your outfit. That may be so, but you don't spot a lot of leopards in a crowd. For my first outfit featuring the coat, I decided to go all out. Do I look like a rockstar? Because let me tell you. I felt like one.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The weather finally cooled down enough to bring out my thigh high socks from <a href="http://www.hanselfrombasel.com/">Hansel from Basel</a>. I loved their lookbooks and branding before I got the chance to style these socks. Now I'm happy to say that I love their products as well. I can't wait to add some of their tights to my collection for the winter. High quality hosiery is an underrated essential when it comes to fall and winter. It really does make all the difference in keeping you warm.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With thigh high socks, I knew it would be easy to stray into either overly school girl or grunge territory. Instead of committing to one style or another, I combined some elements of both to create a sort of rogue school uniform outfit. This is perfectly in line with a philosophy that I adopted while shopping recently: if it looks like something a "sexy librarian" might wear, then it'll probably be my style. I know that trope is completely cliché, but I do find myself drawn to combinations that involve buttoned-up pieces with something more "edgy". </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As I typed that out, I realize how difficult it is to get style down to a "formula". While I know things that I will always gravitate towards, I can never quite pin my style down into a one or two word description. Even the word "classic" makes me cringe because the classics are different for every different style type out there. Someone who is classically preppy probably won't want a leather motorcycle jacket, but I think that's when the most successful outfits are made: when we get just <i>a bit</i> out of our comfort zones and wear things we admire, but don't think we can "pull off". Wear it anyways!</div>Ashlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09088369640004992780noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7371698695773533735.post-57956867062863827032013-10-09T14:04:00.001-04:002013-11-06T23:03:27.779-05:00Playing with Fire<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is my opinion that buying tee shirts with classic rock band graphics on them from chain stores kind of defeats the purpose. I'm <i>totally</i> hardcore for having something that shows my enjoyment of the Rolling Stones, along with the thousands of other girls who probably own the same tee shirt. But hey, actual vintage band tee shirts cost a pretty penny and this is my favorite iteration of the famous lips logo that I've seen to date. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love styling things that aren't necessarily classic with some more buttoned-up, proper pieces. Although my stompin' boots from Modcloth aren't exactly in my comfort zone, I thoroughly enjoyed pairing them with my full skirt and cardigan for an outfit which I was told is reminiscent of <i>School of Rock. </i>Hey, I'll take that as a compliment any day. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This particular tank top actually sparked my idea for <a href="http://highlandecho.com/fashion-forward-who-do-you-dress-for/">my latest fashion column</a> for my school newspaper. I will tell you that there's a bit of a giveaway in the article about my personal life, but that's definitely a story for another time. I promise you'll go "Awww...", so I think the status of my love life is a subject for a post of its own. However, aside from that, the article is about the influences behind how we get dressed. I don't just mean inspiration from movies or decades past, I explore the idea of how much impact our peers and people of the opposite gender actually affect the way we dress. I'd love for you to read the column and leave comments either here or on the website.</div>Ashlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09088369640004992780noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7371698695773533735.post-83970453679762343962013-09-23T14:56:00.004-04:002013-11-06T23:03:48.706-05:00Chasing a Ghost<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i> </i>I felt appropriately haunting on Friday the 13th. As soon as I woke up, I knew I wanted my all black ensemble to contrast heavily with my pale skin. Rather than feeling plagued by anything, I was in my element. A day that is dedicated to the spooky, other than Halloween, felt like a bonus. After all, my favorite Emoji on the iPhone is the <a href="http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https://si0.twimg.com/profile_images/3073330110/454775c95ed1cb858f2026e59707087f.jpeg&imgrefurl=https://twitter.com/TheEmojiGhost&h=497&w=500&sz=36&tbnid=ezrcesTk8qOQBM:&tbnh=96&tbnw=97&zoom=1&usg=__mTFvvPtQN6tb6cQ_Cmiv8oETvKY=&docid=kRpmgla5DeityM&sa=X&ei=FY1AUpH9BYfM9gSqkIFo&ved=0CDwQ9QEwAg">little ghost that is sticking his tongue out</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While I would have loved to sit under a ladder and pet a black cat just to really get the full effect of the 13th, the day passed without superstition taking any tolls. I will admit to having a bit of bad luck when taking these pictures, but I was fortunate enough to get a helping hand from an old friend. Although Patrick and I broke up a few months ago, we have remained in good graces and taking pictures was such a big part of our relationship that it was nice to do it at least one more time for these shots.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm digging myself out of being haunted by things that simply don't matter. Posting hasn't slowed down because of emotional distress, but rather because I have thrown myself into my role as leader on both the cross country team and the school newspaper. But I want anyone that reads this post to have hope. Hold your head high above those ghosts that are darkening your heart. If you need to, cry with <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21MZLhDkNTg">this song from The Head and the Heart</a> as your soundtrack. Hopefully after that, you can get up, dust off any cobwebs from your soul, and find something new to chase that only brings you joy.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /><i> </i>Pants are a highly underrated aspect of many-a-blogger's wardrobe. Most personal style bloggers in the demographic that I follower prefer other separates, say skirts and blouses, or just straight up would rather wear a dress than any other article of clothing. But a killer pair of jeans or trousers is a very powerful thing. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In this outfit, I felt as though I could conquer anything, legs showing or not. I will admit to having a bit of a denim obsession (and I have an inside joke with a friend about just how extensive that obsession may be); however, after buying my Imogene Slims from Imogene + Willie, I haven't even thought about purchasing another pair of jeans. Now I regularly rotate between those and my high-waisted pair from Urban Outfitters; although, I think we all know which pair will last longer. Other than that I can't get enough of wool trousers and printed, cropped pants. It's the perfect menswear inspired touch to counter some of my more feminine dresses.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Basically, I love pants. The two legged pairs just feel like home more so that bearing my skinny runner's legs in a skirt or dress does. Unfortunately, the weather in East Tennessee stays in the upper 80s until much later in the year, but that doesn't mean I'm not rocking pants every chance I get. I always go through my phases with dresses and girlier things, but I know my odd trouser affinity is here to stay.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i> </i>Tomorrow is the first day of my junior year of college. Tomorrow is also my twentieth birthday. I spent my last day as a teenager spending time with good friends, being both melancholy for the things that I feel like I can't change and still trying to use my positive nature to change those very things. The only thing that makes me uncomfortable about being twenty is that it's an even number and I've always preferred the odd ones.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As far as my style transition for this year goes, I'm content with what I have. I'll surely add a few more things here and there as the need arrises (even if I don't really <i>need</i> a leather motorcycle jacket), but for now I can't even imagine what I'd be looking for if I did go shopping. I prefer looks like this: a few old favorites combined with a cheeky thrifted top for a look that's classic with some sass. As soon as fall truly hits, I know I'll be breaking out my academic, collegiate feeling staples and I'm excited to do so! After all, I go to a school with its own registered tartan.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The beginning of the school year/my birthday always gets me going more than the actual new year. I feel truly renewed and ready to start over. The late summer evening light makes everything glow and the cicadas sound like new chances. What can I say? I was born at the perfect time of year for my tastes.</div>

<i> </i>Something that will always give me comfort is knowing how much control I have over what I wear. I realize what a luxury that is, to wake up every day and have the <i>choice</i> to decide what I look like for the day. No matter how rough I think things are going for me, this is a luxury that I'm glad to have. I take it for granted. But I don't want to let my perspective slip through the cracks. August is always a tough month and this particular August has been even harder; however, knowing that I can always put together a killer outfit is helping me keep my head above water. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now that I have settled into my new apartment on campus, I'm waiting for the school year to start for things to get a bit more routine. As of now, cross country practice and work are taking over my free time; however, things always settle down a bit with the advent of classes. One thing that is very different from any other year is that one week from today is not only the start of my junior year of college, but also my twentieth birthday. It's easy to complain a bit to attempt to evoke sympathy from my peers, but the academic inside of me is secretly thrilled. The first day of school on my birthday? It's a great gift.</div>

Something about this outfit reminds me of going on vacation. Perhaps it is the travel themed print of on of my favorite skirts, or perhaps it was the scenery around me. The silhouette of a baggy shirt with a full skirt that has a fitted waist is one of my favorites. It's very retro but still evokes a sense of adventure, like perhaps I actually borrowed a guy's shirt instead of opting for one of my own. I guess it's appropriate that this is my first outfit post after a bit of a hiatus. After moving out of my summer dorm, traveling to Texas, and other personal things, I certainly could use a vacation. </div>
